With help from our community, we can continue to support local programs, educators, and the aspirations of young adults who are pursuing a future in special education and services.
Our Programs
The Whelan Foundation is completely funded through donations and community support offering programs for students, educators, camps and enrichment programs
The Whelan Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization created to empower children and adults with developmental disabilities. We are 100% volunteer-driven and focused on providing fundraising and program support impacting special education for the future.
By creating a diverse offering of programs, we can address the immediate need from local camps while looking at long-term solutions that will add more teachers in trained professionals to the industry. We’re here to make a lasting, generational influence that will continue to expand into new programs.
Our Programs
College Scholarships For Special Education-Related Fields
The Whelan Foundation awards grants to support the higher education goals of its recipients. Our goal is to equalize opportunities for recipients on Long Island who are typically denied them because of cost.
- For students entering or actively pursuing a degree in any Special Education-related field
- Special focus on Long Island schools and students
Student Loan Reduction For Graduates Already Helping Our Community
Our Student Loan Debt Reduction Program assists those already teaching in the special needs arena and demonstrates financial need.
- We believe debt shouldn’t be a barrier to teacher and student success
- Designed for both teachers and those working directly in Special Education programs
Summer Enrichment At Camp Northstar
Camp Northstar was founded in 1998 by a small group of individuals wanting to provide a new and unique camping experience for children and adults with developmental disabilities.
- Funded entirely through donations and community volunteer support
- Provides persons with developmental disabilities, both overnight, day and weekend camping experiences
- Creates opportunities for campers to develop their creativity, confidence, and social interaction skills
